Centre for the Management of Occupational Safety, Health & Environment (COSHE) was officially established in February 2004. The process for creating a safe work and educational environment involves everyone and is applicable in all departments throughout COSHE. The main purpose of COSHE is to provide a safe, healthy environment and protecting the environment through systematic work culture by staff, students, visitors and contractors. This centre has been placed under the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Innovation) Office. In general, COSHE responsibility is to plan and implement monitoring, inspection and training programs and competencies to comply with the requirements of the National Legislation, particularly the Safety and Health Act (1994), the Factories and Machinery Act 1967, the Environmental Act 1974. It is to ensure the safety and health of every UniMAP citizen as well as visitors dealing with UniMAP.

Staff

Earlier its establishment, COSHE was led by Lt Kol (B) Azuddin Bahari as the coordinator from 2004 to March 2016. He was a pioneer in the implementation of the KKP in UniMAP. From March 2016, Prof. Madya Ts. Dr. Irnis Azura Zakarya was appointed as Director until April 2019. Today, this centre is headed by Encik Norazam Abdul Rashid. COSHE comprises 10 staff members and was divided into 5 sections; Administration and Office Management, Campus and Workplace Safety, Chemical Safety and Competency Training, Biology, Laboratory and Research Management and Radiation Safety and Scheduled Waste Management. Each of these divisions has specific focus and commitment in ensuring the Occupational Safety and Health Management System at UniMAP runs smoothly as required by the university.

Achievement

For 14 years of operation, the recognition from within the Department and the national level has been successfully procured. Among the accreditation earned was the UniMAP Innovation Awards 2007, 3rd Place of Excellence for Occupational Safety and Health at the National Level 2006. In 2009, the COSHE with the School of Electronic Engineering Engineering and the Manufacturing Engineering School developed and successfully earned MS 1722: 2005 recognition and OHSAS 18001: 2007. While the latest achievement was that COSHE succeeded in assisting and managing 4 laboratories at 3 centers involved; The School of Environmental Engineering, the School of Bioprocess Engineering and the School of Materials Engineering in recognition of the Malaysian Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (SAMM) 2018 by the Department of Standards Malaysia.
