Chemical Storage

RECEIPT AND STORAGE OF CHEMICALS

Chemicals need to be identified during receipt and deposited according to certain suitability to avoid any undesired reactions and to reduce the risk of chemical accidents. Therefore, several general safety regulations must be complied with and made a continuous practice.
Receipt of Chemicals
  • Avoid purchasing unnecessary or excessive amounts of chemicals
  • Ensure that chemicals are accompanied by a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) upon receipt.
  • Accept only chemicals that are stored in proper containers and labeled.
  • Register the date of receipt and expiry (for some chemicals) in the inventory information.
  • The following information should be included in an inventory list:

         - Chemical name
         - Date manufactured and date received
         - Chemical properties such as flammability, corrosiveness, etc.
         - Additional safety information such as the need for handling in a fume hood or              the need for personal protective equipment.

Chemical Storage Room

  • A chemical storage room should have a good ventilation system.
  • A special room for certain types of chemicals.
  • The chemical storage room needs to be regularly inspected to ensure that there are no leaks or spills.
  • Chemical storage rooms must be located in an easily accessible location for vehicles, for both delivery and emergency purposes.
  • Chemical storage rooms must be equipped with appropriate fire extinguishing equipment, personal protective equipment, and specific communication systems that can be used during emergencies.
  • The chemical storage room must be located near the laboratory to reduce the risk of accidents during the distribution of chemicals.
  • The safety level of the chemical storage room, such as electrical wiring, ventilation system, and others, must be inspected at least once a year.
  • The chemical storage room cannot be used as a preparation or repackaging room for chemicals.
  • The handling of the chemical storage room must be done only by designated personnel.
  • The storage of flammable liquid chemicals in cabinets cannot exceed 227 liters (60 gallons) for liquids with a flash point of less than 60OC (140OF) and cannot exceed 454 liters (120 gallons) for liquids with a flash point above 60OC (140OF).
  • Workers who handle chemical storage are responsible for:
        - Separate chemicals according to their compatibility.
        - Keep separate records for chemicals that have expiration dates.
        - Check labels regularly and ensure that they are not damaged.
  • Containers for filling spilled chemicals should be provided in the storage room in case of chemical spills.
Storage of Chemicals in Laboratories.
  • All chemicals temporarily stored in laboratories must be properly labeled.
  • Chemicals must be stored according to their appropriate classifications, such as acids, bases, oxidizers, toxic substances.
  • Flammable materials should be stored in suitable cabinets.
  • Do not store chemicals in places such as on lab benches, in fume hoods, under sinks, in high places, hard-to-reach places, on the floor, in sinks or refrigerators for flammable substances.
  • Avoid direct exposure of temporary chemical storage areas to sunlight.
  • All gas cylinders in the laboratory must be stored upright and chained.
  • Chemicals that are no longer needed must be stored in the chemical storage room or disposed of properly.
  • Storage cabinets must have good ventilation.
  • Chemicals that are flammable or explosive must be stored in a special spark-free refrigerator.
  • Refrigerators used to store chemicals should not be used at all to store food and beverages, even for laboratory use purposes.
